LIONS CLUB OF SUNBURY INC

YOUTH OF THE YEAR WINNERS

Some of Sunbury’s brightest students recently battled it out to become the Lions Club of Sunbury’s Youth of the Year.

With five excellent contestants from three Sunbury secondary colleges taking part, the contest was intense and the judges had trouble splitting the field, comprising Daniel Saliba and Amber Karras (Sunbury Downs College), Vanessa White and Natasha John (Sunbury College) and Michelle Grover (Salesian College).

After much deliberation, Michelle Grover, 16, a member of Salesian College’s debating team and Hume Young Citizen of 2018, got the nod.

She now moves to the regional final in Bacchus Marsh on Sunday, March 3, with the chance of representing her school at the national final of the Lions Youth of the Year in Geelong in May.

The public speaking award went to Vanessa White, 17, who apart from her studies is involved as a crew leader in recruiting young members for the Sunbury State Emergency Service.

The entrants first faced a panel of three judges for interviews before taking part in the public speaking section of the contest the following night before an audience at the Sunbury Football Social Club.

The Youth of The Year program is a uniquely Australian activity of Lions Australia. It is open to students aged 18-19 from secondary schools and focuses on young adults becoming future leaders of our country.
