Sunbury girl dances off with youth award

She’s a top performer on the dance floor and the soccer field and now Sunbury student Brittany Amor is the local Youth of the Year.

Brittany, 17, was dancing for joy when she took off the Lions Club of Sunbury Hume’s Youth of the Year on Monday (February 21) at the Sunbury Football Club.

Brittany will go on to compete in the zone final in Bacchus Marsh later this year, with the eventual winner competing in the national final in Echuca for a prize of an overseas trip and spending money.

Brittany narrowly won from fellow Sunbury College student Isabel Quinlan, 17, who was named public speaking champion.

Contestants took part in a lengthy interview process with an independent judging panel before answering two impromptu questions and making a speech of their choice.

Judges included local real estate manager John Dunlop of Brad Teal Real Estate (formerly Dunlop Real Estate), Sunbury Police Youth Resource Officer Leigh Johnson and International Women’s Day chair and Sunbury Community Health worker Fi Corboy.

The Youth of the Year is staged nationally to encourage, foster and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our youth, at the age when they are about to begin employment or higher education.

Past quest entrants have included high profile Australians such as former Queensland premier Peter Beattie, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the ABC’s Sabra Lane.

Thanks go to Sunbury Hume Lions Trevor Hoffman, Helena Thompson and Jim and Jan Harvey who organised this year’s awards.
